## What is the Google Business Profile primary category?

The primary category is the single label that tells Google what your business mainly is. Whitespark calls it the number one local search ranking factor, and its 2026 expert survey lists it first for the Map Pack. You get one primary and up to nine additional categories, so choose the primary with care.

The same survey places additional categories eighth. Those rankings come from an expert-opinion survey of about 47 local SEOs, not from Google’s algorithm, so treat them as informed opinion, not a rule Google published.

## How do you choose the primary category?

Finish the sentence “we are a ___” with the most specific label that fits your main service, then match it to the search you most want to win. A law firm should pick a practice area like injury lawyer or divorce attorney, not “law firm”.

How specific should you be? BrightLocal says a narrow, single-location business should use the most specific option that fits and keep broader categories as secondary. A broad business should make the primary the work it wants to attract: its example is an HVAC firm that prefers installation, so it uses “heating contractor” as primary. If the exact category does not exist, pick a broader one that still fits.

## How many secondary categories should you add?

Add only the secondary categories that truly describe what you do. Google allows up to nine, but BrightLocal advises against filling every slot. Each one tells Google to show your profile for that search term too, so add only the ones you really serve.

A simple method: put the primary options you rejected in as secondary. For a divorce attorney, BrightLocal suggests Family Law Attorney, Lawyer and Law Office. Leave out categories for services you do not offer.

| Business | Primary category | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Divorce practice | Divorce attorney | Secondary: Family Law Attorney, Lawyer, Law Office |
| HVAC firm focused on installation | Heating contractor | The primary is the work you want to attract; add other fitting categories as secondary |
| HVAC firm with seasonal services | Air conditioning contractor in summer | Heating contractor in winter (Whitespark’s seasonal example) |
| Injury law firm | Injury lawyer | Not “law firm”, which is too broad |

## How do you see your competitors’ categories?

Google does not show competitors’ secondary categories to ordinary users, so use a tool. Local Search Grid from BrightLocal or Whitespark’s Local Rank Tracker report can reveal the primary and secondary categories of competing listings. Check the businesses ranking above you, then compare their choices with yours.

Write down the primary and secondary categories of the top three. Copy only the ones that truly describe your business. If every top result uses a category you had not considered, ask why before adding it. For other causes of a weak ranking, see why your business is [missing from Google Maps](https://www.dizaynseo.com/blog/why-isnt-my-business-showing-on-google-maps).

## Do categories affect which services you can list?

Yes. The categories you add decide which services you can list on the profile. Pick categories first, then open the services section and add each service you actually offer. If a service you sell is not available to list, check your categories.

Back the services you list with a dedicated page for each one on your website. See our [local SEO services](https://www.dizaynseo.com/services/seo) for how we set that up.

## When should you change your categories?

Review your categories about every six months, because Google updates them often. Whitespark also suggests changing the primary seasonally when your services differ by season, such as an HVAC business that uses Air conditioning contractor in summer and Heating contractor in winter. Change one thing at a time and note the date, so you can compare results.

BrightLocal says the category list has around 4,000 entries, that the number changes, and that Google does not publish the full list. None of the sources we read measure results from category changes, so treat this advice as practitioner opinion and judge by your own calls and requests.
