## How much does SEO cost per month in 2026?

SEO for a small business usually costs between $500 and $5,000 a month. An Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers found agencies charge $3,209 a month on average, consultancies $3,250 and freelancers about $1,349. Price rises with experience: providers in business five to ten years charged more than double what those under two years did.

| Provider type | Average monthly SEO retainer |
|---|---|
| Agencies | $3,209 |
| Consultancies | $3,250 |
| Freelancers | $1,349 |

Averages hide the middle of the market. In the same survey, 63% of providers charged between $500 and $5,000 a month, the most common single band was $501 to $1,000 (20.4% of providers), and the average hourly rate was $111. For one-time projects, the most common band was $2,501 to $5,000.

## What does local SEO cost for a small business?

Local SEO costs less than national SEO. In the Ahrefs survey, providers serving a local market averaged $1,557 a month, against $3,474 for providers serving a worldwide market, and 42% of providers charged $250 to $1,000 a month. Scope sets the price: one city sits near the low end of that range, several cities and service areas push toward the high end.

Local SEO means your Google Business Profile, your service pages, your reviews and the listings that repeat your name, address and phone number. If you serve customers in a single city, this is the budget to start from. National terms are a different, more expensive job.

## What makes one SEO quote higher than another?

Five things move an SEO quote: how many locations and cities you cover, how competitive your searches are, the condition of your current site, how much content and review work is included, and who does the work. A freelancer, an agency and a consultancy price the same job differently, as the Ahrefs averages above show.

- **Locations and cities.** Each extra city needs its own honest page and profile work.

- **Competition.** A broad search in a big metro is harder to win than a narrow one in a small town.

- **Your site today.** Slow pages, broken indexing or no service pages must be fixed before content pays off.

- **Scope.** Articles, review requests, listing upkeep and reporting each take hours every month.

- **Experience.** Providers in business five to ten years averaged $3,648 a month, against $1,541 for those with two years or less.

## What does each SEO budget buy?

Under $500 a month buys tools or a one-time checkup, not ongoing SEO. Between $1,200 and $2,500 a month covers full local SEO for one location: technical fixes, Google Business Profile, new pages, reviews and reporting. From $2,500 to $5,000 covers several locations or national reach. Above $5,000 is for competitive national markets with content and link-building teams.

| Monthly budget | What it usually buys | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | Tools, a one-time audit or a few hours of help | Owners doing the work themselves |
| $500 – $1,200 | Part of local SEO, often without content or reviews | Very small service areas |
| $1,200 – $2,500 | Full local SEO for one location | Most single-location service businesses |
| $2,500 – $5,000 | Several locations, statewide or national reach | Growing businesses, multi-location |
| $5,000+ | Content and link teams for competitive national terms | National brands, e-commerce |

These ranges come from what we see when owners show us their old SEO invoices, and from our own pricing ($450 a month for the Complete plan, which includes SEO). Your quote should list exactly what is done each month.

## Is SEO worth it for a small business?

SEO is worth it when a few extra customers a month cover the fee. If your average job brings in $1,500 and you win one in four quote requests, four extra quote requests a month return $1,500 against a $1,200 SEO plan. Businesses where one customer is worth less than $200 usually get a better return from other channels first.

| Input | Example |
|---|---|
| Average job value | $1,500 |
| Quote requests you close | 1 in 4 |
| Extra quote requests needed to cover $1,200/mo | 4 a month (1 job ≈ $1,500) |

Revenue is not profit, so run it once more with your margin. At a 40% margin, that $1,500 job leaves $600, and a $1,200 plan needs two extra jobs a month, or eight extra quote requests at one close in four.

Use your own numbers: average job value, how many quote requests you close, and your margin. If the break-even is more than ten extra quote requests a month, start smaller.

## Retainer, project or hourly SEO: which is better?

A monthly retainer is best for most small businesses because rankings depend on steady work over three to six months. A one-time project fits a site with a specific technical problem. Hourly SEO suits owners who already have a plan and need an expert to execute pieces. Avoid contracts longer than six months before you have seen results.

| Model | Typical price (proposals we have seen) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $1,200 – $5,000 a month | Ongoing growth over 3–6+ months |
| One-time project | $1,000 – $10,000 | A specific technical problem or migration |
| Hourly | $75 – $200 an hour | Owners with a plan who need execution |

## What are the red flags in SEO pricing?

Five red flags: a promise of the number-one spot on Google, no access to your own Search Console or Google Business Profile, contracts of 12 months or more with no exit, reports that only show impressions and rankings, and cheap packages of hundreds of backlinks. Each one either can’t be delivered honestly or leaves you with nothing when you leave.

- **“Guaranteed #1.”** Google’s own guidance says [no one can guarantee a #1 ranking](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/do-i-need-seo) and to find someone else if a provider does. A guarantee should be about the work or about measured business results, not a position.

- **They own your accounts.** Your domain, Search Console and Google Business Profile must be in your name.

- **Secrecy.** Google also warns against companies that are secretive or won’t clearly explain what they plan to do. You should get a written list of monthly tasks.

- **Long lock-in.** SEO takes months, but you should still be able to leave. A year with no exit protects the agency, not you; month to month is fair.

- **Vanity reports.** Ask for quote requests by source: forms, calls and texts.

- **Link packages.** “500 backlinks for $99” usually means spam that can hurt you.

## How do you compare SEO quotes fairly?

Ask every provider for the same five things in writing: the monthly task list, who owns your accounts, how results are reported, the contract length, and what happens if you leave. A cheaper quote that leaves out content, reviews or reporting is not cheaper. It is a smaller job at a smaller price.

1. **Task list.** Pages written, listings updated, reviews requested, fixes made, each month.

2. **Ownership.** Domain, Search Console and Google Business Profile stay in your name.

3. **Reporting.** Quote requests by source (forms, calls, texts), not only rankings.

4. **Term.** Month to month, or a short term with a clear exit.

5. **Exit.** You keep the content, the accounts and the data.

## What does Dizayn charge for SEO?

Dizayn’s Complete plan is $450 a month in U.S. dollars and includes monthly SEO and AI search work, four articles, listing upkeep and a quote-request report. It runs month to month with no minimum, and the fourth month is free if quote requests aren’t up by day 90. The Basic plan is $99 a month for hosting, monitoring and backups, without SEO.

If you need a site first, the Starter Site is $540 and the Complete Site is $1,200, both one-time. Details are on our [monthly SEO service](https://www.dizaynseo.com/services/seo) page and the [pricing page](https://www.dizaynseo.com/pricing).

## What do small business owners ask about SEO costs?

Owners most often ask whether they can do SEO themselves, how long it takes, whether cheap SEO is real and whether they are locked in. The short version: budget $500 to $5,000 a month depending on scope, expect results over months rather than weeks, and never pay for a guaranteed ranking. Each question is answered below.

### Can I do SEO myself instead of paying for it?

Yes, for the basics. Google Business Profile and Search Console are free, and you can write your own pages and ask customers for reviews. What you pay an expert for is time and experience. If you can give a few hours every week for months, start yourself and hire help for the technical parts.

### How long until SEO pays off?

Google doesn’t publish a timeline. Its guidance is to ask your provider what results to expect, in what timeframe, and how success is measured. In our experience it is a matter of months, not weeks, which is why a monthly plan fits better than a one-off push.

### Is SEO under $500 a month legitimate?

It can be, but check what is included. In the Ahrefs survey, 42% of providers charged $250 to $1,000 a month, so low prices exist. At that level the scope is usually narrow, such as listing upkeep or a few pages, so ask for the task list before you sign.

### Do I have to keep paying for SEO forever?

No. On a month-to-month plan you can stop whenever you choose, and the pages, listings and accounts stay yours. Work already published keeps being found, but new content, review requests and fixes stop. Most owners keep going while it brings in more than it costs.

### Does SEO cost include showing up in ChatGPT and AI answers?

Not always, so ask. AI assistants read many of the same sources as Google, such as listings, reviews and clear pages. Our Complete plan covers both; see [AI search optimization](https://www.dizaynseo.com/services/ai-search) for what that includes.
