## Should a local business choose SEO or paid ads?

Most local businesses should use both in sequence: paid ads or Local Services Ads to get calls now, and SEO to lower what each customer costs over the following months. Ads stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes three to six months to build but keeps bringing calls. If you can only afford one, the deciding factor is how soon you need the work.

| | Google Ads (search) | Local Services Ads | SEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay for | Clicks | Leads (and some missed calls) | Work, monthly |
| Time to first calls | Days | Days to weeks (screening first) | 4–8 weeks first moves; 3–6 months growth |
| When you stop paying | Calls stop | Calls stop | Rankings fade slowly |
| Typical cost | ~$66–70 average cost per lead across industries | ~$50–65 per lead in home services | $1,200–2,500 a month for one location |
| Best for | Fast tests, busy season | Eligible trades wanting calls now | Lower cost per customer over time |

## What is the difference between SEO, Google Ads and Local Services Ads?

SEO earns a spot in Google Search and Maps results through your website and Business Profile, and costs work rather than clicks. Google Ads buys a place above or beside results and charges per click. Local Services Ads put a verified profile at the top for eligible trades and charge per lead. Only SEO keeps working after you stop paying.

The three also show up in different places. Ads and Local Services Ads sit at the top of the page and are labeled as ads. SEO covers the organic list and the Google Maps results below them. A strong [review history](https://www.dizaynseo.com/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews) helps in the Maps results, and it also makes people more willing to call from an ad.

## How much do Google Ads cost per lead?

Google Ads costs vary widely by industry and city. Recent WordStream and LocaliQ benchmarks put the average cost per lead across industries at roughly $66 to $70, with home-service trades ranging from under $50 to well over $150 per lead. You also pay for clicks that don’t become leads, so a weak website makes every ad more expensive.

## What are Local Services Ads and how much do they cost?

Local Services Ads are the listings at the very top of some local searches, shown with a Google Verified badge once you pass Google’s screening. You pay per lead, not per click. Industry benchmarks put home-services leads around $50 to $65 in 2026, depending on trade and season. Since October 2026, unanswered business-hours calls can be billed too.

Google says new advertisers must pass screening and verification to earn the badge, and that the old Money Back Guarantee tied to the Google Guarantee badge is ending.

## How much does SEO cost and when does it pay off?

Local SEO for one location usually costs $1,200 to $2,500 a month. First ranking moves appear in four to eight weeks and steady growth in three to six months. It pays off when the extra customers it brings cover the fee; for a $1,500 average job and a 1-in-4 close rate, four extra quote requests a month break even on $1,200.

SEO also compounds where ads don’t: [Lemus Weddings](https://www.dizaynseo.com/work/lemus-weddings) went from 9 to 248 monthly Google clicks between May and September 2026 with no ad spend, and those pages keep working the month after.

## Which should you start with?

Start with ads if you need calls within weeks and have budget for $50 to $150 per lead. Start with SEO if you can wait three to six months and want a lower cost per customer later. Do both if you have a busy season coming: ads cover this season while SEO builds the next one. Fix your website first in every case.

| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| Need calls this month, have ad budget | Google Ads or Local Services Ads |
| Can wait 3–6 months, want lower cost per customer | SEO |
| Busy season in 2–3 months | Ads now + SEO for next season |
| Website slow or hides prices | Fix the website first |

## Why does your website matter for all three?

Every channel sends people to your website or profile, so a slow page, hidden prices or a hard-to-find call button waste the money spent on ads and the work spent on SEO. Doubling how many visitors ask for a quote halves your cost per lead in every channel. That is why we fix the site before scaling anything.

## How do you tell which channel is actually working?

Measure cost per booked job, not cost per click. Give each channel its own tracking phone number or form source, log every call and quote request, and count only the jobs you won. A channel with cheap clicks but no booked work is losing money, and a pricier one that books jobs is winning.

Check each channel monthly. For SEO, also watch impressions and clicks in Google Search Console, since they move before calls do. If you are starting from zero, our [first 90 days of SEO](https://www.dizaynseo.com/blog/first-90-days-of-seo) guide shows what to expect and when.

## Do these three channels cover AI answers like ChatGPT?

Not fully. Ads and Local Services Ads buy a place in Google’s results, but AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity write answers from the sources they read. Being named there comes from accurate listings, clear pages and outside mentions, which is SEO and AI search work. You can see where you stand with a free check.

## Frequently asked questions about SEO, Google Ads and Local Services Ads

These are the questions owners ask us most about choosing between the three. The short version: pick by how fast you need calls, whether your trade is eligible for Local Services Ads, and how long you will stay in business. Details are below.

### Can I run ads and SEO at the same time?

Yes. Many local businesses run ads for steady calls now while SEO builds. Keep them on the same fixed website, because both send people to it and a weak page wastes both budgets. Review both in one monthly report so you can move money toward what books jobs.

### How long does SEO take to work?

It varies. Google’s own SEO guide says some changes can take effect within hours while others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks to judge whether a change helped. Plan on months, not days, and track progress in Search Console.

Source: [Google Search Central, SEO Starter Guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide).

### What does the Google Verified badge on Local Services Ads mean?

It means the business passed Google’s Local Services screening and verification. Google replaced its separate badges with a single Verified badge, and says ads ranking is not affected by that change. It is not a promise of quality for any one job.

Source: [Google Local Services help](https://support.google.com/localservices/answer/7549288).

### Do I need Local Services Ads if I already show on Google Maps?

Not necessarily. Maps results are earned and free per click, while Local Services Ads are paid and sit above them. If your Maps ranking already brings enough calls, test ads only for the seasons or areas where you want more. If you do not show on Maps at all, see [why businesses miss the map](https://www.dizaynseo.com/blog/why-isnt-my-business-showing-on-google-maps) first.
