# How to check if your business shows up in AI search

Asking ChatGPT about your business once tells you very little, because AI answers change from run to run. Here is what a visibility checker actually measures and how to read the result.

## How do you check if your business shows up in AI search?

Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, such as a service plus your city, then repeat each one several times in separate chats. Note whether your business is named, whether the details are right, and who is named instead. An AI visibility checker automates that and reports a mention rate.

A manual check is a fine first look. If your Google profile is also weak, start with these [Google Maps fixes](https://www.dizaynseo.com/blog/why-isnt-my-business-showing-on-google-maps).

## What does an AI visibility checker measure?

A checker measures how often your brand is mentioned across a set of prompts. Good ones also report mentions by platform and the topics and sources tied to your brand. Ahrefs’ free tool, for example, reports total and per-platform mentions plus top topics, domains and pages. Position in an answer is not a reliable measure.

| What it measures | What it tells you | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often your business is named across repeated prompts | No standard score; each tool defines its own |
| Mentions by platform | Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI treat you differently | Each platform answers differently |
| Unbranded prompts | Whether you appear when the customer doesn’t know your name | The harder and more useful test |
| Accuracy | Whether name, hours, address and phone are correct | Check against your own profile by hand |
| Sources cited | Which directories, listings or sites the answer draws on | Varies by tool |
| Competitors named | Who is recommended instead of you | Changes between runs |
| Tone | Whether the description of you is positive or neutral | A judgment call |

## Why is one AI result only a snapshot?

Because AI answers rarely repeat. SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai ran 2,961 prompts, and ChatGPT and Google’s AI returned the same list of brands in less than 1% of repeats. The same list in the same order appeared in less than 0.1%. One check is a photo, not a trend.

The study ran 12 brand-recommendation prompts, each 60 to 100 times per platform. It is not peer reviewed, and Gumshoe.ai, which sells AI tracking tools, took part, as Rand Fishkin disclosed. Narrow categories showed clearer leaders: in a headphones test, 142 people wrote very different prompts, yet Bose, Sony, Sennheiser and Apple appeared in 55% to 77% of 994 responses. That is why a service plus your city is easier to measure than a broad query.

## Which prompts should a local business test?

Test three kinds: an unbranded search like “best [service] in [city]”, a direct comparison with a named competitor, and a question about your own name for accuracy. Run each several times in separate chats. A specific local query is easier to measure than a broad one.

Insites also suggests prompts framed as a real customer, prompts about your reputation and your niche service, and a follow-up when you are missing: “why didn’t you mention me?” Ask the tool to name its sources too.

## What should you write down from each answer?

Write down five things per answer: whether you were named, whether the name, hours, address and phone were right, which sources the answer used, who was recommended instead, and whether the answer changed between runs. Over several runs, count mentions as a rate rather than judging one answer.

Insites, which sells visibility tools, reports that among businesses ChatGPT recognizes, almost half have some incorrect detail, and 41% are not recommended on unbranded queries. We could not verify its method, so treat those numbers as a signal, not a benchmark.

## What do free AI visibility checkers leave out?

Free checkers are usually a single snapshot. Ahrefs says its free version has no historical trends, share of voice, competitor comparison or custom prompts; those sit in its paid product, Brand Radar. Ask any tool how it builds prompts and how many runs it uses before trusting a score.

There is no standard AI visibility score. Each tool defines and weighs its own, so compare a tool only with itself over time. Fishkin called tools that report your exact position in AI answers “baloney”; frequency across many runs is the steadier measure.

## What do you do with the result?

Compare your mention rate with the competitors named most often, then fix the gaps you can control: correct details on your Google Business Profile and site, a dedicated page per service, and mentions on sites AI answers draw from. Nothing guarantees a mention. Recheck monthly with the same prompts.
