Why do Google reviews matter so much for a local business?

Reviews affect where you appear on Google Maps and whether people choose you once they see you. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 97% of consumers use reviews to decide and 41% always read them, while Google’s Ask Maps feature reads review text to answer questions like “which rental company delivers on weekends”. More recent reviews with real detail help on every front.

Google’s own help page says more reviews and positive ratings can help a business’s local ranking, though it does not say how much: Google Business Profile Help, local ranking.

What is the simplest system to get more Google reviews?

Ask every customer, the same way, within a day of finishing the job, with a direct link that opens the review box. Send it by text or email, and print it as a QR code on invoices or thank-you cards. Asking consistently matters more than asking cleverly, so write the steps down and make one person responsible.

  1. Copy your review link from your Google Business Profile.
  2. Send it the day after the job by text or email, using the script below.
  3. Put the QR code on invoices, receipts and the back of your business card.
  4. Reply to every review within a week, mentioning the job.
  5. Count new reviews once a month so you know the system works.

Sign in to your verified Business Profile and use the option to share a review request link or QR code. Google’s help pages say customers can leave a review by visiting that link or scanning the code, and that they must be signed in to a Google Account. Open the link on your own phone before you print anything.

  • Text and email: paste the link as a button or a plain URL. One tap should open the review box.
  • Print: use the QR code on invoices, receipts, thank-you cards and the back of your business card.
  • Website: add a “Leave a review” link in the footer and on your thank-you page after a quote request.
  • Test it: if you have to search for your business first, the link is the wrong one.

When is the best time to ask customers for a Google review?

Ask right after a good moment: when the job is finished and the customer has said thanks, or the day after while the details are fresh. Ask once, then send at most one polite reminder a few days later. A steady trickle of new reviews each month looks more natural and gives future customers recent proof than one big push a year.

  • In person: when a customer compliments the work, say “Would you mind putting that in a Google review? I’ll text you the link.”
  • By text or email: the day after, with the script below.
  • On paper: a small card or invoice note with the QR code, handed over with the final bill.
  • Who asks: the person the customer dealt with, since that is who they remember.

What should you say when asking for a review?

Keep it short, personal and neutral: thank them, mention the job, include the link, and make clear that honest feedback is welcome. Don’t tell them what to write or how many stars to give. A short note that you’ll fix anything that went wrong is fine, as long as you send the review link to everyone.

Text, day after the job“Hi [name], thanks for choosing us for [job]. If you have a minute, an honest review helps other customers decide: [link]. And if anything wasn’t right, reply here and we’ll fix it.”
EmailSubject: “How did [job] go?” — two lines of thanks, the link as a button, your name and phone.

Which review tactics does Google not allow?

Google’s policy bans offering anything in exchange for reviews, asking only happy customers (review gating), discouraging negative reviews, posting reviews for yourself or a competitor, and buying reviews. Review platforms report stricter enforcement since April 2026, and penalties range from deleted reviews to a suspended profile. Discounts “for a 5-star review” are the most common mistake.

Sending the review link by text, email or QRYes
Discount, gift or raffle for a reviewNo

How should you reply to Google reviews?

Reply to reviews in a conversational, not promotional, tone. Thank the person, mention the specific job, and add one useful detail for future readers. For a negative review, apologize for the experience, state facts calmly without arguing, and offer to talk offline. Google’s guidance is to never share a reviewer’s private information or attack them, and not to use replies to offer deals.

Do reviews on Yelp and other sites matter too?

Yes, more than before. Since July 2026, Yelp licenses its reviews and business data to OpenAI for ChatGPT’s local answers, and Apple Maps also uses Yelp data. Claim your free Yelp listing and keep it accurate. You can’t ask for Yelp reviews the way you ask for Google reviews; Yelp discourages solicitation, so simply let customers know you’re listed there.

How do you know your Google reviews system is working?

Keep a simple monthly tally: how many customers you served, how many were sent the review link, how many new Google reviews arrived, and your average rating. If many customers get the link but few reviews arrive, shorten the message or ask in person first. If few get the link, the problem is the habit, not the customers.

  • Asked: customers sent the link this month.
  • Received: new Google reviews, and how many include a sentence about the job.
  • Replied: reviews answered within a week.
  • Compare: your count and recency against the top three businesses for your main search, as in the Google Maps checklist.

Assistants such as ChatGPT also read reviews and listings, so a steady flow of detailed reviews helps there too. See how to get recommended by ChatGPT, or run the free AI visibility checker on your site.

Google reviews FAQ: what do owners ask most?

Owners mostly ask whether they can ask, whether they can reward customers, and what to do about bad reviews. In short: yes, you can ask any real customer; no, you cannot offer anything in exchange; and you answer bad reviews calmly in public. The details are below.

Is it allowed to ask customers for Google reviews?

Yes. Google’s own help page says you can ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code to leave a review. What matters is that the review reflects a genuine experience, and that you ask everyone, not only the customers you expect to be happy.

Can I give a discount or gift for a review?

No. Google says offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews is fake and misleading content and is strictly prohibited. Thank customers with a reply instead, and keep any loyalty perks separate from the review request.

Do customers need a Google account?

Yes. Google says customers must be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review. Customers without one can still tell you how it went by replying to your text, which helps you improve even if it does not become a public review.

How many reviews do I need?

There is no magic number. Google says count and rating are part of local ranking but does not give a target. A practical goal is to match or pass the top three businesses for your main search in both count and recency, then keep a steady monthly pace.

Can a service business with a Business Profile get ranking help beyond reviews?

Yes. Reviews are one piece of local search, next to categories, a complete profile and a site with a page for each service. Our SEO for Google Search and Maps covers those pieces, and the pricing page lists what each plan includes.
