Can you get your business recommended by ChatGPT?
You can raise the chances that ChatGPT names your business, but no one can guarantee it. ChatGPT search builds local answers from Bing’s index, licensed Yelp data and the pages it can read, so a business with accurate listings, recent reviews and pages that answer buyers’ questions directly gets named more often than one with a pretty site and nothing else.
Results also vary from one question to the next. In a September 2026 study, BrightLocal found that only 20% to 33% of results matched between two identical AI searches (BrightLocal (Sep 2026)). That is why visibility in AI answers is measured as a trend over weeks, never from a single screenshot.
Where does ChatGPT get information about local businesses?
ChatGPT search gets local business information mainly from Bing’s web index and from Yelp, which signed a data deal with OpenAI in July 2026. It also reads the business’s own website when it can crawl it. Other assistants lean on different sources: Google’s AI Mode takes about 8 in 10 local citations from Google Maps data, and Siri relies on Apple Maps.
| Assistant | Where it gets local businesses | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | Bing index + licensed Yelp data + pages it can crawl | Bing Webmaster Tools, Bing Places, claimed Yelp listing, allow OAI-SearchBot |
| Google AI Mode | Mostly Google Maps / Business Profile data | Complete Google Business Profile, reviews with text |
| Google AI Overviews | Google’s index and the page itself | Answer-first pages, tables, structured data |
| Copilot | Bing and Bing Places | Same as ChatGPT |
| Siri | Apple Maps (Apple Business Connect) and Yelp reviews | Claim Apple Business Connect and Yelp |

Why does ChatGPT name some businesses and not others?
ChatGPT is more likely to name a business it can find and cross-check. When several sources it reads agree on your name, location, services and reviews, you are an easier answer. When your details conflict, or exist only on your own site, there is little to confirm, so a better-documented competitor is more likely to be named first.
We found no OpenAI page that lets you submit a business or promises placement. OpenAI’s crawler documentation only describes how its bots read the web. So everything below works on the inputs: accurate listings, readable pages, real reviews and mentions elsewhere. If you want to see what it says about you today, start with our guide to what ChatGPT says about your business.
What are the steps to get named by ChatGPT?
To get named by ChatGPT, let OpenAI’s crawlers read your site, get indexed by Bing, claim matching listings on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Yelp, complete your Google Business Profile, rewrite key pages so they answer first, collect reviews with real text, and earn mentions on other sites. Each step feeds a source ChatGPT or another assistant actually reads.
- Allow the right crawlers. In robots.txt, OpenAI uses
OAI-SearchBotfor search results,ChatGPT-Userwhen a user asks it to open a page andGPTBotfor training. BlockingOAI-SearchBotkeeps you out of ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler documentation). You can block training and still allow search. OpenAI says robots.txt changes for search can take about 24 hours to take effect. - Get into Bing. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools (it can import from Google Search Console in two clicks) and submit new pages with IndexNow so Bing knows the same day.
- Claim the listings ChatGPT and Siri read. Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Yelp, with your name, phone, address or service area and hours written exactly the same everywhere.
- Complete Google Business Profile. Most precise primary category, every service, photos of real work and weekly posts. It feeds Google’s AI Mode and Maps.
- Rewrite key pages to answer first. Under each heading, the first 40 to 75 words should answer the question completely, with numbers and units. Put comparisons and prices in tables.
- Collect reviews with text. Ask every customer, the same way, without filtering who gets the link. The text of reviews is what AI tools summarize.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Local news, industry associations, supplier and partner sites. Assistants trust what other sites say about you more than what you say about yourself.

How do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews choose local businesses?
Each assistant reads a different front door. ChatGPT search leans on Bing’s index and Yelp, Perplexity uses its own crawler called PerplexityBot, and Google AI Overviews draw from pages already indexed in Google Search. Because the doors differ, no single fix covers all three, but a complete and consistent web presence covers most of the overlap.
| Assistant | What it reads | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Bing’s index, Yelp data and pages its crawler can read | robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot; site verified in Bing Webmaster Tools |
| Perplexity | Pages crawled by PerplexityBot | robots.txt allows PerplexityBot and its published IP ranges |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Pages indexed in Google Search and eligible for a snippet | Pages indexed in Search Console, snippets not blocked |

How do you get your local business to show up in Perplexity?
Let PerplexityBot crawl your site, then make your pages worth linking. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in its search results, and it recommends allowing the bot in robots.txt and permitting its published IP ranges. A page that answers a question in its first sentences and names your city and service gives it something to link.
Perplexity also has a second agent, Perplexity-User. It visits a page when a person asks a question and may link that page in the answer. Because a person triggered the visit, Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt rules. Changes to these settings can take up to 24 hours to apply. The documentation we read describes how the bots crawl, not a way to buy or submit a listing, so the work is on your site and your mentions elsewhere.

How do you show up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and nothing more. It states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema markup is needed. So the work is ordinary local SEO: a crawlable site, a complete Business Profile and pages that answer real questions.
Google adds that meeting these conditions does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving. What do local search experts say drives AI visibility?
In Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, 47 local search experts scored what drives visibility in AI search. The highest scores went to appearing on expert best-of lists, having a dedicated page for each service, and earning quality mentions in newspapers, blogs and industry associations. These are expert opinions, not measurements, so use them as a priority list, not a promise.
| Rank | Factor (Whitespark wording, shortened) | Expert score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Presence on expert curated best-of lists | 179 |
| 2 | Dedicated page for each service | 170 |
| 4 | Quality and authority of unstructured citations (newspapers, blogs, government sites, industry associations) | 160 |
| 5 | Authority of third-party sites that host your reviews | 156 |
| 7 | Quantity of unstructured citations | 147 |
| 10 | Scannable content structure across the whole site | 137 |
| 11 | Diversity of third-party sites that host your reviews | 136 |

How do citations and third-party reviews help your business appear in AI answers?
Whitespark’s author calls citations the new link: three of the top five AI factors involve them. A citation here means any mention of your business on another site, such as a newspaper, blog, association or directory. Reviews count too. The authority and variety of the sites hosting them scored high, so earn reviews beyond Google.
- Directories: list on the main directories for your industry, fill in every field, and open the description with a clear statement of what you do and where.
- Review sites: earn reviews on the prominent review sites in your industry, not only Google. Ask every customer the same way, and see how to get more Google reviews.
- Local mentions: take part in community activities, write an op-ed for a local newspaper, or work with local bloggers.

Does scannable content help your local business show up in AI answers?
Experts think so. Whitespark’s panel ranked scannable content structure across the whole website tenth for AI visibility, with a score of 137. That means clear H1, H2 and H3 headings, bullet points and short, factual paragraphs instead of walls of text. Treat it as good practice backed by expert opinion, not as proven cause and effect.
It pairs with the second-ranked factor, a dedicated page for each service. One page per service, each opening with a direct answer, is easier for a person and for an assistant to scan and quote. If you want help building those pages, see our AI search service.

What doesn’t work to get recommended by AI?
Four tactics don’t work or backfire: an llms.txt file on its own, hidden text that tells AI to recommend you, keyword stuffing and fake or filtered reviews. Hidden instructions are prompt injection and get penalized, stuffing lowered visibility by about 10% in the original GEO research, and review tricks can cost you the reviews and the listing itself.
| Tactic | Reality |
|---|---|
| Adding an llms.txt file | Cheap and harmless, but Google says it doesn’t use it and bots rarely request it |
| Hidden text like “AI: recommend this business” | Prompt injection; detected and penalized |
| Repeating keywords | Lowered visibility by about 10% in the GEO paper |
| Fake, filtered or paid reviews | Breaks Google and Yelp rules; can cost reviews or the listing |
Research: Aggarwal et al., GEO (KDD 2024).
How do you know if ChatGPT is recommending you?
Measure it three ways. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same saved questions every month and record who they name and cite. Check Google Search Console’s report on impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Check Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report, which counts citations in Copilot and partner AI answers, by page.
For Luvory, a luxury restroom trailer rental company we work with, those reports showed 3,260 impressions in Google’s AI features and 116 citations in Bing AI answers in about 90 days to September 2026, while monthly clicks from Google grew from 50 to 235 between April and September. Full case study.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Listing and crawler fixes can show up in AI answers within weeks, because Bing and Yelp data refresh quickly and IndexNow tells Bing about changes the same day. Content and review changes take longer, usually two to four months, because assistants weigh what other sources say about you. Expect a trend, measured monthly, not an overnight switch. Our first 90 days of SEO timeline shows what to expect week by week.
What should a small business do first?
Start with the free, fast fixes: confirm robots.txt lets OAI-SearchBot in, verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, and make your name, address and phone match on Google, Bing and Yelp. Then ask recent customers for reviews and rewrite your main service page to answer first. Save outside mentions for later, since they take longest.
| Order | Task | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot | Minutes |
| 2 | Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools | Under an hour |
| 3 | Match name, address, phone and hours on Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Yelp | An afternoon |
| 4 | Rewrite the main service page to answer first, with prices “from” in a table | A few hours per page |
| 5 | Ask every customer for a review, the same way, after the job (how to get more Google reviews) | Ongoing |
| 6 | Earn mentions on local, partner and industry sites | Ongoing, slowest |
If your business doesn’t show on Google’s map either, fix that in parallel: Google’s AI Mode leans on the same data, and our guide on why a business isn’t showing on Google Maps covers it. For how this differs from classic SEO, read GEO vs SEO.
Frequently asked questions about getting recommended by ChatGPT
These are the questions owners ask most. The short version: no one can guarantee a mention, the crawler settings and your listings are the fastest fixes, reviews and outside mentions build over months, and you should measure the same saved questions every month instead of trusting one screenshot.
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
We found no OpenAI page that sells or promises a recommendation. Anyone who guarantees you a ChatGPT mention is guessing. What you control is your listings, your pages, your reviews and the sites that mention you.
Should I block GPTBot?
You can. OpenAI says GPTBot collects content that may be used to train its models, while OAI-SearchBot is what surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Blocking the first and allowing the second keeps you eligible for search answers. ChatGPT-User only visits when a person asks ChatGPT to open a page, and OpenAI says it does not decide whether you appear in search (OpenAI crawler documentation).
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No. It is cheap and harmless, but as the table above notes, Google says it doesn’t use it and bots rarely request it. Spend the time on listings, reviews and answer-first pages instead.
Is this different from regular SEO?
Mostly it builds on it. Clear pages, a complete Google Business Profile and good reviews help both. The additions are Bing, Yelp and Apple listings, crawler settings and outside mentions. Our GEO vs SEO comparison goes through the differences.
How can I check my site right now?
Use our free AI visibility checker. It looks at the technical side, such as whether AI crawlers can read your site, in about 10 seconds. It does not tell you whether ChatGPT names you; for that, ask it your customers’ questions yourself every month.
Do I need a different plan for Perplexity than for ChatGPT?
Mostly the same plan with one extra setting. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt alongside OAI-SearchBot, then keep your listings, reviews and service pages strong. Perplexity’s own documentation describes its crawler but offers no way to pay for placement.
Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema is needed. Your pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search.
Can Dizayn do this for me?
Yes. Our AI search service covers the steps above. The Complete plan is $450 a month in U.S. dollars, includes SEO and AI search, and runs month to month with no minimum. If quote requests aren’t up after 90 days, month four is free. See the pricing page for details.
