How to rank in Google Map Pack: the short answer
To rank in the Google Map Pack, make your Business Profile match what people search, keep it accurate, earn real reviews, and build a site that other sites mention. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. You can improve the first and third. Distance you cannot change, and nobody can guarantee a spot.
The Map Pack is the block of three local businesses with a map that shows above the regular results.

What does Google say decides local ranking?
Google says local results come mainly from three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a profile matches the search. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher. Prominence is how well known the business is, partly from links to your site and your reviews.
Google also asks for complete, accurate business info, including the category and regular and special hours, and says that makes a business more likely to appear in local results.

Which 10 factors do local experts rate highest?
Whitespark’s 2026 survey of local search experts ranks these ten factors highest for the Map Pack. Primary category and proximity lead by a small margin. The scores are expert opinion based on what they observe, not confirmed by Google, so read the order as a guide to priorities and not as a formula.
Forty-seven experts were invited. Each one scores every factor from 0 to 5, and the scores are added up, so a higher number means experts see more weight. GBP means Google Business Profile.
| # | Factor | Whitespark score | Can you control it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Primary GBP category | 227 | Yes |
| 2 | Proximity of address to the point of search | 225 | No |
| 3 | Keywords in the GBP business title | 223 | Only within your real business name |
| 4 | Physical address in the city of search | 213 | Only by where you operate |
| 5 | Business open at time of search | 189 | Yes, through accurate hours |
| 6 | High Google ratings, 4 to 5 | 181 | Partly, by earning honest reviews |
| 7 | Address showing on GBP, not hidden as a service-area business | 176 | Depends on how you serve customers |
| 8 | Additional GBP categories | 173 | Yes |
| 9 | Quantity of native Google reviews with text | 170 | Partly, by asking real customers |
| 10 | Proper placement of the map pin | 165 | Yes |
Third on the list is keywords in the business title. Use your real business name only: stuffing keywords into it can get a profile suspended.

Which of these factors can you control?
You control most of them except distance. Choose the most specific primary category, add true secondary ones, show an accurate address and pin, and keep hours correct. Earn reviews from real customers and reply to them. Distance, and where your business is located, stay fixed, so improve everything else around them.
A searcher standing across town may see a competitor first even if your profile is better. That is normal, and no setting fixes it. If your business does not show at all, start with missing from Google Maps.
How do reviews and open hours affect the Map Pack?
Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and it suggests replying to them. The expert survey also rates a business being open at the time of search among its top five factors. So collect honest reviews from real customers and keep your regular and special hours accurate.
Local experts also point to steady, recent reviews over one big total. Ask right after a good experience, never buy reviews, and never screen out unhappy customers before they can post.

Can you pay to get into the Map Pack?
No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Paid ads sit apart from the organic pack, so they are not a way in. Anyone who sells you a guaranteed Map Pack spot is promising something Google says cannot be bought, and this guide makes no guarantee either.

What should you fix first this week?
Start with the profile, because it feeds the top factors. Confirm the primary category, address, pin and hours. Then ask recent customers for honest reviews and answer the ones you have. Last, make sure your website names the same services and city, and earns links from local sources.
- Compare your primary category with the one the top three businesses use for your main search.
- Put the pin on your real entrance and match the address to your website exactly.
- Mark special hours for holidays so the profile never shows you open when you are closed.
- Ask every customer for a review the same way after the job.
- Give each main service its own page on your site and link it from the profile.
